Novena to the Holy Spirit
Opening Prayer
Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful.
And kindle in them the fire of your love.
Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created.
And you will renew the face of the earth.
Lord, by the light of the Holy Spirit
you have taught the hearts of your faithful.
In the same Spirit help us to relish what is right
and always rejoice in your consolation.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Day 1
We begin our novena invoking the Holy Spirit and asking for openness to the gifts He wishes to give us.
Come Holy Spirit. You who came down upon the Apostles and the Blessed Mother on Pentecost, open my heart to be ready to receive the gifts of Fear of the Lord, Piety, Fortitude, Knowledge, Understanding, Counsel, and Wisdom that you wish to give me. May they yield good fruit in my life and in the lives of those you are calling me to serve.
Our Father…
Hail Mary…
Glory Be…
Day 2
Today we ask for the gift of Fear of the Lord, a holy fear of separating ourselves from Him by sinning.
Come Holy Spirit. Fill me with Holy Fear of the Lord. Not just the fear of punishment for doing wrong, but the fear of losing my friendship with you and of separating myself from your love. Help me to avoid sin and seek good out of love for you.
Our Father…
Hail Mary…
Glory Be…
Day 3
Today we ask for the gift of Piety, a holy reverence and affection for God and giving Him just and due worship.
Come Holy Spirit. Fill me with Piety. Help me to feel reverence and affection for You and all You have made holy, and to choose to act in a reverent and respectful manner even when I do not feel like doing so. Amen
Our Father…
Hail Mary…
Glory Be…
Day 4
Today we ask for the gift of Fortitude, a holy courage and firmness of mind to do good, even in the face of evil.
Come Holy Spirit. Fill me with Fortitude. There are countless heroes and witnesses from all times and places who chose to die rather than deny you. Help me to face my own temptations with the same courage and resolve out of love for you and knowledge of your love for me. Amen.
Our Father…
Hail Mary…
Glory Be…
Day 5
Today we ask for the gift of Knowledge, the ability to judge in matters of faith and in right and wrong.
Come Holy Spirit. Fill me with Holy Knowledge. There are many influences in the world that try to confuse me on what is right and good, and that try to distract me from following your commands. Help me to remember that your law is a law of love, and to know what is good and evil in the situations you place in my life. Amen.
Our Father…
Hail Mary…
Glory Be…
Day 6
Today we ask for the gift of Counsel, the gift that allows us to be guided by God in matters of our faith and salvation.
Come Holy Spirit. Fill me with Counsel. There are things, some good, some neutral, and some evil that vie for my attention each day. Help me to focus on what is truly important, and be receptive to what You are calling me to in my life. Amen.
Our Father…
Hail Mary…
Glory Be…
Day 7
Today we ask for the gift of Understanding, the gift of seeing the deeper and higher truths in things.
Come Holy Spirit. Fill me with Understanding. God the Father, Our Lord Jesus the Son, and You want my truest happiness and well-being, but sometimes in my day to day struggles I find it difficult to see how that is possible. Give me understanding of both your plan in my life, and how my sins are getting in the way, that I may repent of them. Amen.
Our Father…
Hail Mary…
Glory Be…
Day 8
Today we ask for the gift of Wisdom, the ability to conduct our earthly affairs in light of God's truth and commands.
Come Holy Spirit. Fill me with Wisdom. In my responsibilities to my family, my nation, my employer or school, and all my communities, it can be difficult to always make sound choices. Help me to remember that this “worldly” life is not at all separate from my “prayer life”, that I may be able to judge and direct my actions in a holy and prudent manner no matter where I am. Amen.
Our Father…
Hail Mary…
Glory Be…
Day 9
Today we ask that the Gifts the Spirit wants to give us bear the fruits of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, mildness, and temperance in our lives.
Come Holy Spirit. Fill me with your gifts. Come upon me and let them work the wonders and healing You intend in my life. May the gifts you give me bear the fruits of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control in everything I say, think, and do, that I may better follow and love Our Lord Jesus. Amen.
Our Father…
Hail Mary…
Glory Be…
